To Be Thankful

thankful, grateful, happy, loved, family, Thanksgiving, emotions, sharing, connections, friendship

To be thankful does not mean that you have not experienced loss.

It does not mean you have not experienced pain.

It does not mean that you had the best day of ever.

To be thankful does not mean that you spent today with your loved ones.

It does not mean that all of your wishes have come true.

It does not mean you have it all figured out.

But to be thankful CAN mean small things.

Or big ones.

It just doesn't have to mean all of these. Or even one of them.

To be thankful can mean you have a roof over your head.

And you have food in your belly.

And know that people care about you.

To be thankful can mean that you've lived a good many years so far.

And you find yourself grateful for those.

And that you will forever recognize your privilege and the blessings you've experienced.

Today is a day to be thankful.

Even if you didn't have the day you planned.

Even if you burned the turkey and there was no pie.

Or if you sat home and ate your dinner in front of the television.

Today is a day to be thankful.

Because we live and breathe and function and we have opportunities that our loved ones before us may not have had.

And because we need to find things to be thankful about, lest we lose hope that this world, this wonderful place we call home - that it won't forever be what we want it to be.

So.

Today, I encourage you.

I remind you.

To be thankful.

As I am for each of you who takes the time to read what I have on my heart and mind.

To leave me comments or share my words.

Or, simply, to those of you who remind me that even in the moments I am alone - without people around me - that I am, truly, never alone.

For those of you out there who represent this for me.

I choose, for always ...

To be thankful.

  2. I’m so thankful that my family moved to Raleigh so we could become friends IRL. You have saved my sanity more than a few times. I know this year hasn’t been great for either of us, but 2018 is going to be our year, damnit!
