Let's talk books.

I just avoided a panic attack when my Kindle decided not to cooperate with me.

I have over 300 items on that thing and to think about losing access to them (yes, I know, I don't read 300 things at once, and I do have access via Amazon, etc.) freaked me out. I was about to up my medication. For serious.

I'm an avid reader.

Admittedly, I've fallen behind since my mind just hasn't been looking for the worlds that books provide since losing my dad. It should realistically - or perhaps stereotypically - be the opposite, but it's not. I normally set myself a goal of 100 reads as the new year approaches. I'll do the same for 2014.

The last few years I maintained a list of books I read (thanks, Goodreads!) and I have one for this year, as well. It's shorter than it has been in the past, and I'll get a post up in January with a recap.

I also often do the link-up of my year in book titles. My life in books for 2012 proved to be an interesting batch. 2011 in books was fun, too. And my Reading with Redneck: 2010 in review was the first time I participated. Throughout those posts you'll find links to the complete lists of books I've read over the years. I haven't been great at updating for 2013, which is why that'll come along in January, too.

Right now I'd like to give you a peek at a handful of books from my to-read shelves for the coming year. I'm not including anything I'm due to review, because those are more given reads, and I'd like to just include what I think I'll be picking up and diving into. Or what I plan to read, anyway!

The Interestings

The Goldfinch

The Theory of Opposites

Soy Sauce for Beginners

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen Year Old Boy With Autism

The Book Thief

So, that's my short list. I have loads more - for sure - I'm addicted to reading. I think it's a pretty great addiction to have, though. I will definitely be sharing more of my to-reads and wrap up 2013 by giving you some feedback on my favorite and least favorite reads. Just stick with me. I'm working my way back to my reading roots, promise!

Do you have one book that's on your MUST READ list for 2014? Share in my comments! I'd love to hear about it and add it to my Goodreads shelves.

  1. You are going to love Wonder. It was so good even my 12 year-old male students cried.

  2. I love this, I could talk books all day but fearful of setting a goal. I have been reading a lot of heavy parenting books..they take me more time. Goldfinch is on my shortlist too. I just finished The Fault in Our Stars. Not the right time in your life for you to read but mark it for later (if you haven't read it yet). Book Thief was amazing. I refuse to watch the movie. Thanks for giving me some new titles. Now off to read Playing to Win.

  3. I need need need to read more fiction again. I had NO IDEA Donna Tartt had another book out! No idea! Anything she writes is a must read for me and I would love to read the Interestings as well.

  4. Me too me too! All of the above. Total reading addict. I really really want to get better about doing book reviews/write ups right after I finish reading though. I have a pile up waiting to be posted about... but I just keeping reading.

  5. Oh... and I'll have to add your books to my "to be read" list. (Um... I should be better about goodreads too)

  6. I just read Book Thief and Wonder in the last two weeks. LOVED them both. Great list!

  7. Many of these are on my 2014 to-read shelf as well! I had a goal to read 100 books this year, and I got to 79, so I'm pretty happy with it (been pulling a couple of late nights this week, too!). Thanks for the recommendations for next year.

  8. You speak my language! I loved The Interestings. Several of your other selections are on my list. I just wish there was more time to read!

  9. My to be read pile is huge. I've been editing my second book and the writing and editing takes away from my reading time :(
If you are interested in reviewing nonfiction let me know..

  10. That is an interesting list. I am currently reading "Then We Came to an End." Very good! In 2014 I will be reading Malcolm Gladwell's "David and Goliath" because I got it for Christmas. No other "planned" books - just whatever looks good at the library. I read quite a lot myself.

  11. Oooh, fantastic! All of those books are on my to-read shelf as well. :-)

  12. The Theory of Opposites is $2.99 for Kindle now.

  13. That is one of my biggest ereader fears. What happens when the ereader stops working? Eeek! I'm glad you were able to get yours cooperating again.

I am excited to read your reading recap. But I'm even more excited about your list for 2014 - mostly because I have read a couple of them already (The Book Thief and Wonder), and they were awesome. You are going to have such a great reading year.

  14. I have the Interestings on my list to. I also plan to read the Divergent trilogy because somehow I still haven't and my 12 year old wants me to. Not sure what else though! I usually just browse the digital library or Amazon and decide what to add to my Kindle without a real plan, except for the authors I always read.
