Maverick's Smokehouse and Taproom in Durham, NC

Durham, NC, North Carolina, BBQ, Smokehouse, Taproom, dinner recommendation, blogging community, incredible food, signature cocktails

Last week I had an opportunity to enjoy dinner hosted by Maverick's Smokehouse and Taproom in Durham.

It. Was. Amazing.

I went with my friend Kate from Life of a Ginger, and we ordered the BBQ nachos with pulled chicken (as seen in the photo above^). Oh my sweet goodness - they were amazing. I think I ate too much of them as I wouldn't let our waitress take the plate away, even when she brought us our completely full trays of food for the main meal.

Now, I ordered the smoked southern brined fried chicken.

I've never tasted fried chicken like this before. Ever.

The skin was really delicious, but I'll be honest, I picked through a lot of it to get to that smoky chicken. It was so strange - you could tell how delicious it was going to be - and yet, still find yourself surprised at how good it actually was.

And for my sides I got the okra and the smoked gouda and cheddar mac 'n' cheese. You'll see those below, along with their incredibly addictive onion hushpuppies, and The Delicious - one of their signature cocktails. As someone who doesn't hit the hard liquor too hard, I was a little hesitant to dive into this drink. But it has maple syrup and cinnamon. How could I refuse? The bartender was happy to help adjust the drink for me so it wouldn't be too strong and so I'd be able to enjoy the flavor, along with the booze. It was very gingerbread-y to me, and not too maple-y. So I loved it. And those are too words!

So.

Freaking.

Good.

The menu itself had so much variety - you're bound to find something you'll fall in love with.

On another night I'm going to have to sit outside and enjoy their small fire pit tables. They're super cute and make the setting especially cozy. They even have a bar outside. What more could you want?

You're right. Nothing. Nothing but great company. And I had that, too.

So - considering grabbing a great meal in Durham and have no idea where to go? Head to Maverick's. You won't be sorry. In fact, I'm guessing you'll come back by and thank me for the recommendation. It's just that good.

Disclosure: I would like to re-state that this meal was hosted by Maverick's. While I am not required to write a post about the meal, it was great food and a great environment, AND the staff was really hospitable and friendly, so I made a choice to share this info and these images - which are all my own. If you have any questions about the food and/or the restaurant, let me know! I'll do my best to tell you more about my amazing meal. And whatever you do? Make sure you get those onion hushpuppies. They're not even super onion-y. Promise.

  1. The food was so good! I have had brisket in VA, TX, GA, and the Carolinas—the brisket I had at Maverick’s was probably the best. And I loved how they served three different types of BBQ sauce. The sweet potatoes fries are so good I couldn’t stop eating them!! I can’t wait to go back!
