The importance of words

Words are critical to our lives.

Whether we read them - say them - think them - they're essential to who we are and how we continue to be ... day to day, they mean so very much.

Do you ever stop and think what your words sound like to your child?

I do. Certainly.

All the time.

Sometimes not as quickly as I should, though.

Sometimes I'm that mom who shouts, "What are you THINKING?"

And then I remember that she is only five.

Harsh. My words feel harsh and scraping as I hear them come out of my mouth.

I never want them to sting my child.

I want them to take care of her. Comfort her. Surround her - always.

I want to ensure that she knows that my words will always be there for her. Just like my heart and true being. That I will never leave her floundering. Even on the days that my words are loud and fierce. Even when I say thing she might not enjoy hearing ('No, you canNOT ride your bike in the rain!' and 'NO. You may not have two cookies for breakfast. Or gum. Especially not gum!')

But no matter what I want my words to come from a place of love. One she will always know is there, always feel safe in and be surrounded by. And always recognize the importance of.

Words that show love, support and shielding from as much pain as possible.

That's the importance of them for me - as a mom - to my little girl.

What do words mean to you?

  3. Yes, once they are said, you can't undo them. Makes me more cautious - words can stick in your mind forever, you know?

  6. I think this happens to most of us from time to time. I think sometimes it's just the stress of the day that causes us to not think for a couple minutes.
But kids are forgiving and love us unconditionally.

  10. Words are so important, especially to kids. Soetimes wish I had as much time to edit the words I say to my kids as the words I write. But we all do the best we can!

  11. You are so right. The things that stick out to me the most are the abrasive things.
