Delicacy ~ Book Review

Oh, Delicacy!

There are no words to explain how I devoured this book. Pun of any sorts not intended.

It was delicious. Delightful.

Such a simple and elegant read. Just like Natalie. Natalie is the main character of this sweet novel. We connect with her in an instant. Turn each page to learn more about her. We breathe with her. Take on new challenges. Recognize small intimate moments. We weep with her. Sob. Lose all sense of what it means to go on living. And then we find life again. As change is somehow breathed into her heart, into her soul, we feel it, too. We have hope.

I think I just put my finger on the best way to describe this book. It is so intimate. The fact that it is not a tremendously long novel is not why - though that helps.

But the relationship we're given with Natalie, straight away, is intimate. We connect with her, we are in awe of how her actual relationship blooms. We want more. We want to follow them through their lives together until they are old and grey.

I worried I ruined the book for myself when I glanced at the back cover and caught something that was to come. I was so mad at myself, I feared I'd never get back in. But she pulled me in anyway. Or should I say the author did. Mr. Foenkinos brought breath into this young lady in a way I've rarely read a male writer do. This is a pleasant compliment, I promise.

Natalie and Francois are such a dynamic. Straight away we feel fate in our midst. And then she twists and turns things around on us. I don't want to tell you more, and I suggest you skip the back cover to truly live in the story. But even having read it, I was not deterred. I kept going. I read this book in less than a day. And yes, I did feel as though I devoured it.

Later on in the story we meet Markus. I won't get into his role, or the characters that surround them, or any extraneous information, but Markus is an interesting individual. Foenkinos writes him incredibly well. You'll want to know more. Hang in there. You'll feel good if you do.

I am truly happy I read this book and definitely recommending it to anyone in need of a good love story, a strong female character, and an environment that permits you a quick escape from your own.

For a change I am not including the cover image for this review. I don't want anyone to judge a book by its cover, so to speak. I learned that this book is being made into a movie, and I'm usually not one to go for movie covers, but I think that's what I have here. I won't tell you who is in it - and suggest when you read it you avoid the cover details until you get further into the story. This way you can create your own Natalie!

Happy reading!

  1. Francois? Is it French? It sounds wonderful, and I don't normally go for love stories.
