Katy Perry on Sesame Street: Yay or Nay?

So, by now you've probably heard all about the Katy Perry and Elmo video that Sesame Street has pulled from it's show because, well, because some parents have been up in arms about Katy's cleavage - or something like that.

Now, forgive me if you are one of them, but my daughter just made me watch that video three times in a ROW and not once did she say anything about Katy. She pointed out that there was a puppy (in a few places), pointed out that we saw ELMO'S BOOTY (seriously! When do we get to see his full body these days, right?) and then the only thing (sorry, I lied) she said about Katy was, why is she running? Elmo doesn't want to play?

Yeah. So, what's up with pulling it? Apparently, according to OMG from Yahoo! - incredible news source, I know - parents had an issue with what she was wearing. She was supposed to be playing dress up, and you know what? As someone who has been trying to find a costume for my 3-year-old daughter for Halloween, I've been hard pressed to find something that isn't, well, flat out skanky. I think Katy and Sesame Street hit the nail on the head with this one.

I honestly think it's a shame that people have had such an issue with it that the video has been pulled, but I'm just one mom. I'd love to hear more on what other parents think. Does it depend on your child's age? I mean, what is the projected age-range for Sesame watchers these days, anyway? Do we really think that the 5 and under crowd is going to care if they see a little boobage bouncing while she chases Elmo? I was honestly watching my daughter and she was more interested in the non-focused-on things.

As for me, I was excited to see Oscar pop out of his trash can on the sidelines. It cracked me up. See if you can find him. It's like Where's Waldo, only quicker. All I needed was a quick shot of Cookie Monster and I would have been over the moon and more.

Anyway, just figured since it's a hot topic, I'd bring it here. So, parents, where do you stand? Give it a watch, if you haven't yet, and share your thoughts here in my comments section. I'd love to hear from you.

  1. I think it's a cute little video but I do think it shows too much chest. Cleavage is one thing but bouncing boobies is another especially on a kids show. I wouldn't have gone so far as too complain and try to ban it though. You see more than that just visiting Wal-mart.

  2. I think it's a brilliant idea - I'm a fan of parents watching tv with their kids. I think my husband would very much enjoy watching this video with my eldest daughter, and I would've enjoyed watching her point out to him the details that he might be missing...

  3. I think she looked fine. Probably would have been less controversial in a T-shirt.

  4. There's only one scene where I was a bit disturbed by it. I think they should have chosen a different dress. But I don't think they should have pulled it.

  5. Pierce and I watched it twice. He said "I SURE do like that video!".
Here's the thing. Are you gonna keep your kids from the beach? Cuz we all know the beach has more skin than that. Yeah, her dress is kinda skanky, but so what? In the real world, you see skanky dresses. Can't protect kids 100% of the time. It's a cute video and P liked the song :-)

  7. So we just watched it. My 3 yr old son loved it. And I dont think he even noticed her boobs. He only had eyes for Elmo.

I really only noticed that she was barely covered when she was running. Low cut dresses and running dont really go well together.

Someone on the set should have probably said something. Why go ahead and make the video to just pull it? Kinda dumb.

  8. I think it's a little much...it looks like it doesn't fit right, but I can't say I would have noticed if it wasn't pointed out to me.

  9. SO not a big deal to me. That is what she looks like all the time, I didn't think it was scandalous and her dress was only slightly lower cut than most of the Disney princess dresses. People need to just relax sometimes.

  12. Thanks for posting this, as I had not seen the whole thing. I was wondering what the big "controversy" was about. I think it's ridiculous that the video was scrubbed. It was cute. The dress was a dumb choice, considering she was running/flopping around in it - but like someone above said - my kids have seen worse at Wal-Mart and on the beach. It was not so tacky that I would have thought much about it if I had just seen it on tv and not heard anything about it. and it's Katy Perry...what did they expect?! She's fun and quirky and they shouldn't have pulled it. I'm sure there is some editing they could have done to appease the others.

  15. I didn't see the video (can't stream here at work) but I did see a picture.

I have zero problem with that. I have no problem with my son seeing any sort of nudity that isn't sexualized. It's not like Katy is spraying whipped cream out of her bra the way she is on MTV.

Wait, she didn't do that on Sesame Street, right?

Kids see more than that everywhere they go. Big deal. They're just boobs.
