Five Books You'll Ignore Your Kids To Finish

fiction, reading, goodreads, Kindle, amreading, I recommend, book list, must reads

We all know how it goes - it's so hard to fit in time to read that sometimes that window between a shower and sleep is when you squeeze it in. And what to do when you just can't put down the book or the Kindle? What to do when you hear that small voice calling your name?

Keep reading, of course!

I've got a list of five incredible books here that you must read. Pick up a few for your summer vacation or the next time you hand the kids off to the grandparents. Or, well, if you're like me? Pretty much any other day. Whatever works for you.

Five Books You'll Ignore Your Kids To Finish

Come Away With Me was such a phenomenal read. Moving, powerful, touching, emotional, raw. Just so so good. You're going to start reading and not want to put it down. It's the kind of book you finish and you're like - wait, what? What just happened? How? Wh-? And then you go back a few chapters, do some skimming, and read the ending again. It's the kind of read that takes hold of you and refuses to let you go until you're done. Definitely the book for you if you're looking to get through the next soccer practice or swim meet (not while your kid is racing, of course!).

Have you not read this yet? What are you waiting for? Pretty much throughout the entire year of 2015 I recommended The Good Girl to every single person who asked me what they needed to read. Every. Single. Person. It got to the point of my being a bit predictable, but that was totally okay, because the book was not. Absolutely not. Kubica's debut novel is still a favorite - the kind I might actually pick up and read again someday - even though I know what comes next. It's also absolutely the kind of book you'll use to drown out the sounds of your household, so consider that the next time you need to get away but can't walk out the front door.

Simply put, The Kind Worth Killing is a crazy read. The story is so strange and twisted, and it's the kind of book you spend some time guessing what you think has happened or is going to happen and on nearly every turn Swanson surprises you. He stops you in your tracks and has you scratching your head. The connections, communications, the concept of the story - so much of it is awful - honestly. But this book, man. This book is a doozy of a read. I'm actually sad that it's not up there with Gone Girl and The Girl on The Train when it comes to recognizable thriller titles. Trust me. You're going to add this to your list.

I really loved What I Remember Most. This was my introduction to Cathy Lamb, but not her first book, by far. Lamb has a number of enticing novels to choose from. That said, I'm strongly suggesting you pick this one up and dive in. This book might keep you up at night - but it's also the kind of read you can savor and enjoy over time. Whatever you're looking for? What I Remember Most has it. Also? This book has one of the scariest characters out of all the books I read in 2015. ALL the books. Scariest character. Don't be afraid to pick it up, though, because you need to read it.

Hosseini is one of my must-read authors. Whatever he writes I will read. All three of his books will capture you and draw you in and force you to forego pretty much anything else. But And The Mountains Echoed is such a phenomenal story. It's so powerful. You'll want to curl up with it and not put it down until you're done. If you haven't read this yet you need to make the time. And the time? Is now.

So - there you go. Five titles you will absolutely ignore your kids to finish.

Or, simply, five really great reads.

  1. The Good Girl.....one of my top 5 favorite books! I persuaded my book club to read it for September, and its been a while since I read it, so I'm going to read it again (yay). I liked When the Mountains Echoed, but not as much as The Kite Runner. Come Away with Me is still sitting in my tbr pile. Good choices.
