Book of the Week: Dear Carolina, Kristy Woodson Harvey

books, reading, review, goodreads, Carolina, fiction, new author

How beautiful is this book cover? It's so beautiful that every time I see it I feel a wave of peace come over me. No water or wave pun intended, promise. It's just that pretty.

When I connected with Kristy Woodson Harvey on Facebook I have to admit that I initially agreed to read and review her book for the name alone.

Dear Carolina.

If you didn't know anything about it wouldn't you pick it up with that title and cover photo?

In this book Carolina isn't a place - even though it's where I live these days - and where Kristy Woodson Harvey grew up and currently resides with her family.

Carolina is a young girl.

This book is the story of her life written to her by her two mothers.

Two women who love her dearly. Who want her to know about their lives. Their connections. The amount of love they have in their hearts. With a stress on how much they love each other - and her.

This book is about family. About second chances. About open hearts.

It's about Khaki, Carolina's mother, and her journey to making her family complete.

It's about Jodi, Carolina's other mother, and her journey towards finding steady ground.

It's about the men in their lives who support them, love them, and even those that intimidate and frighten them.

It's about a young mom making a choice for her child, a very difficult choice. A choice where she finds herself overwhelmed, emotional and struggling - and ultimately puts her baby first.

I especially love the format of the book. The so-called letter writing that isn't in letter format. You might not even realize that these are for Carolina, aside from some comments from each woman. You just slip right into the story and stay there.

Dear Carolina is a book that you'll want to read this summer. Whether you pack it for your next trip to the beach, sit on your front porch with a sweet tea, or squeeze in some reading time when you hide in the bathroom (come on, we ALL do it!), you're going to love it.

This is Kristy's first novel and I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

To find out more about Kristy Woodson Harvey you can hop on over to her website.

That's where you'll find her looking just like this ... hopefully hard at work on her next release.
