I find myself here.

The room is dark.

The only light on is the small bulb that brightens the hallway between the bedroom and the bath.

It's enough - though - for me to see whatever it is I am focused on at the moment.

A book? Sure. Sometimes the lack of overhead hurts my eyes. But I can see well enough to dive in and become a part of the storyline that absorbs me through to my soul.

My iPad? Sure. My connection to the outside world. With a small escape from that which surrounds me. A peek on Twitter. A conversation 140 characters. What more do I really need? Perhaps for some that is not quiet enough, but for me, it gives me a way of finding out what's happening with the people I know and have learned to love. An extended family of some. Friends. News stories. Entertainment. Humor. Much needed humor.

The TV? Yeah - maybe. It can be on, maybe an episode from The Food Network that I can just watch and enjoy. (Thanks, Aarti and Ree!)

Or maybe I'm just there, in the dark. Thinking.

Though it's probably the reason I stay awake so late at night. That my *quiet place* is where I do all this other stuff. And then when it is actually time to close my eyes, I can't.

I've read that the bedroom and the bed should be saved for sleep and only sleep (and, ehem, okay, other things). So why is it that I find myself most easily when I am curled up, or laying flat out, crunched up on some pillows, losing or finding focus in my king-sized bed?

This post was a response to the Write on Edge RemembeRED post today about our Quiet Place. Where's yours?

  1. I'm with you - I love to read in bed. And I go to bed much earlier than you, but I do often have a hard time falling asleep.

  2. Probably because it's the place we go at the end of the day, and then we find ourselves reviewing everything that's happened, or reading, or catching up with social media stuff. It's a busy place!

  4. Oooh, I love reading in bed, but I don't do it often enough. I don't find myself up there until I'm beyond exhausted lately!

  5. I'm totally the same way. I'd MUCH rather be snuggled in my bed when I'm wiggin' out. It's definitely the most comfy place to read!

Hope that Roid Rage is tonin' down a little for you! Hang in there!

  6. I totally understand this. My first quiet place is a hot bubble bath, but the second is most definitely my bedroom. I blog from there, watch most of my tv and often read there too. So don't feel bad about not only using it for sleep! You are not alone!

  7. I get every last bit of this-from the busy quiet mind to the sigh-worthy lack of sleep.

    Our quiets are similar. {no surprise there.}

  8. That's my quiet too. Late at night. Staring at the ceiling fan.
Unless my husband is playing the nasal trumpets...then not so much

  10. I love to read in bed. Though, it comes and goes as it's a battle with a husband who doesn't like any light on when he's sleeping. I've been known to hide under covers just to escape into another world for a little while before heading off into dreamland. :> You took me straight there...nice.

  13. I thought sleepless nights due to children are reserved for the first year and night feedings. but the first time in my life I have turned into a night owl has been in a past year. My son takes all my time and quiet equals night, when he is asleep.
Silence is even more golden, right?
